Integrating Experiential Learning and AI in Higher Education

Session Organizer
Prof. Carla M.A. Pinto, Technical University of Porto, School of Engineering

This special session explores how higher education educators can thoughtfully combine experiential learning and artificial intelligence (AI) to foster student engagement, motivation, knowledge construction, and critical thinking. Grounded in Kolb’s Experiential Learning Theory, the session considers how AI can support inquiry, problem-solving, reflection, simulation, and formative feedback within active, student-centred learning.
Participants will examine pedagogical approaches for designing AI-supported experiential activities across disciplines and discuss how to align them with learning outcomes and assessment. The session will also address key considerations, including learner agency, academic integrity, ethical AI use, and the risk of over-reliance on automated tools. Through shared reflection and discussion, attendees will consider practical strategies for creating meaningful, inclusive, and responsible learning experiences that use AI to enhance—not replace—human teaching and learning.
Papers that highlight innovative models, identify challenges, and propose sustainable strategies for Integrating Experiential Learning and AI in Higher Education are especially encouraged.
